From Sketch to Production: What to Check When Selecting Hardware for Bags and Gear

In the serial production of bags, cases, backpacks and gear, product design and the choice of main materials are only part of the equation. Hardware and components — including zippers, buckles, hooks, eyelets, hook-and-loop fasteners and other fittings — also play an important role. The right components influence ease of use, reliability of individual assemblies and the ability to reproduce the same design consistently from one production batch to another.

A component should not be considered separately from the product. It needs to function properly as part of a specific assembly. That is why hardware selection should begin during the product development and prototype testing stage.

1. Define the product’s intended use

The first step is to understand the conditions in which the finished product will be used. An everyday urban bag, outdoor gear, a protective case and tactical equipment may have very different requirements in terms of load, frequency of opening and closing, exposure to moisture and abrasive surfaces, or operation while wearing gloves.

Components that look similar may differ in geometry, material, mounting method, load capacity or compatibility with particular webbing, zipper chains or installation equipment.

Selecting hardware based only on appearance or dimensions therefore does not always guarantee predictable performance in the finished product.

2. Specify the assembly parameters before ordering

The next step is to clearly define the component specifications and how it will be integrated into the product.

For a buckle or other fastening component, key parameters may include:

  • type and size;
  • compatible webbing width;
  • operating direction;
  • material;
  • installation position and mounting method.

For zippers, important factors include the chain type and size, slider type, required length, end stops and sewing method.

When working with eyelets, snaps and rivets, manufacturers should also consider the thickness of the material layers at the installation point, component diameter, finish or coating, compatible dies and equipment settings.

Documenting these parameters in advance does not complicate production. On the contrary, it helps eliminate ambiguity before components are ordered and a production batch is launched.

3. Test the component in the actual product construction

Even when a component meets all technical requirements, it is advisable to test it directly in the product or prototype.

Hardware that performs well on a separate piece of material may behave differently when installed in a multi-layer seam, reinforced webbing or an area exposed to repeated bending.

For this reason, samples should ideally be tested:

  • with the same materials intended for serial production;
  • using the actual mounting or sewing method specified in the design;
  • under conditions that are as close as possible to real-world use.

The test results should be documented together with the exact component reference, specifications and installation parameters. This information becomes particularly valuable when the product moves into repeat production.

From Prototype to Consistent Serial Production

A systematic approach to selecting and testing hardware helps manufacturers reduce rework, simplify repeat production and maintain consistent product quality from batch to batch.

Clearly defined component specifications also improve communication between designers, product engineers, production technologists, manufacturing teams and suppliers.

For Acropolis, as a manufacturer of bags, cases, backpacks and equipment, the selection and testing of materials and components is an integral part of product development — from the initial design and prototype to serial production.
